So this weekend I finally did a shoot that I've been waiting to do for a month. The concept for this shoot was one that was suggested by Tara Lee, the model in the photos. She asked me if it would be possible to make a newspaper dress for a shoot, and, being the designer for a latex fashion brand, I jumped on the opportunity to combine shiny latex fabric with something like newsprint.
We had so many hiccups trying to do this shoot. It had to be rescheduled twice; once because our weekend plans changed, and again because the weather wouldn't cooperate. It was deceivingly difficult to find a decent location for us to take photos and be sheltered from wind and impending rain clouds.
Last Saturday was spent driving around to different locations in and around the city to scout out some nice backdrops for the outfit. We found some really great areas, although the field in the photos was not ones of those locations.
The day of the shoot, June 2nd, we met up and gathered everything we needed - the clothing, the camera gear, the lighting - and hopped in Tara's truck to go to our preferred spot.
When we got there, there were too many people crowding the place we wanted to use. A little put out, but not giving up, we decided to go to another place we had talked about. On the way back out the dirt road, though, Tara suggested checking out a field just off the road we were on.
When we pulled up to the hidden field, I knew we found our place. I hadn't set foot in this field since a high school party, but I had never seen it during the day. There were little yellow flowers everywhere, and the weather was perfect, despite what the weatherman said about rain. The only downfall of this place was that because it was used by teenagers regularly for bonfires and parties, there was broken glass all over the ground.
We managed to work around that small issue and I finally marked off one thing from my photography bucket list - shoot a concept in a field of flowers! I also got to use an off camera flash setup for the first time, and it worked out much better than I had hoped.
I can't even describe how pleased I am with the results of the day. And it was all done in an hour. I can't wait to shoot more amazing concepts with Tara Lee. We have so much planned for the next few months, and lots to do in preparation for all of it, but I will make sure to share the photos when they happen. :)
